Silkie cochin mix

I know this has been discussed here before but with sooo many post on this forum I was not able to find anything on it. So here is my situation. My favorites are Silkies and Cochins, I have buff cochins and was able to find a white cochin hen but unable to find a white rooster for her, so sence my buff cochins are only 4 month old I didn't want to put her in with them just yet, so I put her in with my buff pair of silkies for company, thinking ok if I get some eggs from her I will try them in the incubator and see how many hatch. Well!! my first hatch 6 out of 6 eggs hatched and 2 weeks later 6 out of 6 chicks hatched again, wish I could have this good of luck with my pure silkies. so now I have 12 silkie/cochin mixed chick and my question is: What will they look like. How do you tell a blue chick from a black or can you even tell at 2-3 weeks? Has anyone done this before if so can you post some pictures of your little cuties.

The chicks will have normal feathering like the cochins, but will carry the silkie gene. They will most likely have black skin, 5 toes on each foot, and a partial crest. They will also have a walnut comb.

White to buff is an amazing total crapshoot of color

Buff can have several genetic origins. White is only a mask and what color the hen is "behind" the mask is unknowable.

Though it varies, blue look silver/gray/dk gray. Black chicks look dk gray or black - hard to tell at first. Gray chicks are born as patterned chicks on a yellow or white background. White can be yellow or white downed. Partridge are pattern marked.

First generation birds like yours may or may not have walnut combs. Probably darker skin or black skin but no guarantees. I've a fourth generation sizzle - who has a red face and a squashy looking red single comb. It happens. There are also black single combed birds...

Yes, that's how frizzles or sizzles are made - when you combine either a silky feathered bird and a normal feathered bird, or a silkie and a bird already frizzled - frizzles or sizzles are your result.

Sizzles are a new breed, basically the goal is a bird with silkie features- the walnut comb, the dark skin/face, blue ears, five toes, feathered feets - to the third toe, but curled, normal feathers.

Frizzle can be any bird of any breed crossed to silkie or frizzle with curled normal feathers.

Frizzle and sizzle breeding is complicated by the smooth feathered birds also produced, the frazzles - over curled birds with fragile feathers (from frizzle to frizzle breedings), the silkie feathered ones, and the curly silkie feathered ones. LOTS of outcomes eh?

I'll get a picture of my f4 pair of nice Sizzles, and my smooth sizzle boy for comparison..

Here is my sizzle baby about a week and half old now...I LOVE sizzles!! And I think shes a splash...ooh that makes it sooo much better. There is another smaller one under her a week old and then the one on the side of her. SOooo adorable

Bleenie on here has silkie/ cochins with regular feathers, she can show you some very cute pictures.

Oh walkswithdog! I LOVE that first guy! The color combination, and the red comb! One of the things that turns me off about silkies is the combs on the roos. But I could handle a few of those little guys!

It was his appeal to people as a pet that kept him from being culled and he is instead going to head my pet line of Sizzles, he's either blue birchen, or a modified black birchen - we'll see what he produces once I get him hens. If I keep up with it, since sizzles are a new breed, maybe I can get enough interest in the color to add it to the standard. I should have a picture of him now - he looks like fireworks walking in the sun. And all his feathering went into major poof, he looks very cochin now.

My show line will be the blue black and splashes, I am also working on. This next generation growing is blue and black silkies - hopefully at least two hens to add to the line. One of my current hens has an SC black comb. Need to fix that if I'm breeding to standard.

I don't like the giant warped freaky walnut combs but don't mind the size of the one my roo has.

I'm much more fond of these little guys than I thought I would be.
